The other day I was playing around with Trigger Rally, and noticed that the keyboard play in that game wasn't half bad. Perhaps we should take a look at the keyboard handling code used in Trigger and see if it can be incorporated into VDrift.
What do you guys think of the TORCS keyboard code?
the TORCS keyboard code is better than most, but to see the best grab epsxe and play GrandTurismo2, that will give you a very good idea as to how to go about play a car game with buttons
I like the Torcs keyboard system, don't play with it much since I've got a wheel, but still it works pretty good, I also like the graphical part of it in the screen.
So, who wants to take a crack at the TORCS code and figure out what to do to VDrift's keyboard handling to make it better? I don't have much time, I've already got enough VDrift stuff to do. However if someone were to submit a patch soon it might make it into the next release...
torcs has a completely diferent way of simulating the tires, the torcs system would only work for that tire model.i see two ways of doing this  make new keyboard code. no other oss simulator has pacejka and a remotely useable keyboard setupspeaking as a keyboard player either of these is good for me but i suspose people with wheels may think diferent
heheh... i don't think we'll be downgrading the physics anytime soon. especially not for something as simple as better keyboard controls! right now there's just a stupidly simple algorithm handling keyboard inputs, but i don't think it'd be hard to add a better one.it's just been kind of a low priority... you have to admit, no matter how fancy you get, keyboard control is never going to be as good as analog control (via gamepad or wheel or whatever). since there do seem to be a lot of people who want better keyboard controls, though, we figured we'd invite other people to do it if they want it ASAP (instead of waiting for me to do it).
