I notice that vDrift releases ar very large & take days for me t download. Can you please compress releases with 7-zip
I agree with jpenguin. The size is getting really big and computers tend to make my room so hot.

Also, it might be benefical to use bittorrent to distrubute the game. It is great for broadband users since they have the possiblity of downloading your game really fast.
I believe the .exe windows setup file is compressed; I don't think zipping it up would help much.

The sourceforge mirror network is usually pretty snappy for broadband users, but if you want to seed a bit torrent then I'm sure people would appreciate that, too.
Our growing release sizes is exactly the reason why we decided to release both full and minimal packages this time. The minimal packages are still 30 or 40 megabytes but this is improved over the size of our last version. This only includes 3 or 4 smaller cars and our 2 smallest tracks.

There is some space we could get back if we generated all our medium and small sized textures on the fly, instead of having large medium and small size prerendered textures. Otherwise about the only thing we can do is remove more cars and tracks. We could do a minimal release as only 1 car and 1 track but that would kind of suck. Even if we did all that I don't think the file would be under 15 MB, so it is still going to take forever to download on dialup.

As for bittorrent, I don't really know how to set that up nor do I have time nor see any great need (SF.net does a great job). However if someone wants to explain to me how to seed/set things up/tell me how to get the server to seed the torrent, I will be happy to do it.
I was wondering how active the download server is, BT won't help much if there are a few downloads running it at any give time. One or two, per version, is't worth the trouble. BT works great with 100s or 1000s or a even few if every one leaves it running, and there not on dial up, or SAT like me.

Can a minimal install be done then a SVN, load of cars and tracks??

Cory
SCons doesn't do anything that fancy, but if you did install from the autopackage as root, then perhaps checking out from SVN and doing scons install would fill in the rest for you. It might also just reinstall everything, which at that point you might as well have just checked out from SVN and installed in the first place.

The ideal way to add cars would be to let the user download them one at a time in the game. Maybe sometime in the far future we'll have such a system that lets players browse cars and download the ones they're interested in.

Here's the sf.net stats page for VDrift if you're wondering how many downloads per day etc.: http://sourceforge.net/project/stats/?gr...ugn=vdrift

I'm sure when we do a new release a torrent of the full Linux Windows and Mac versions could be sustained reasonably for a while, maybe even a few weeks. I'll set up a seed, if someone else will work on getting it into trackers, and tell me how to set it up Smile
