Ive been fiddling with the car setup files but in case others want to know, here are the factors that effect drifting in real life.

The initial angle should be inertia. The amount you toss the car into the corner. After that the gas pedal/engine rpm should take over. If you let off the gas, your angle should become less, if you get on the gas, the angle should be more.

Ive managed to get the car to this point. The problem is that the car wont change it's original arch. Meaning once you toss the car into a turn, its doing that exact line no matter what. The angle only serves to point you in the direction you are when you come out.

Now how do you fix this? I thought to add more longitudinal traction but that just makes it harder to get the rear out... anyone have ideas? The car needs to be propelled forward by more gas as well as get more angle, as it stands, it doesnt.
I think the fix to that problem is to change the friction coefficients for the front tires such that you get more lateral grip out of them after you've exceeded their peak slip angle. That is, make it so that you don't have to be super precise at aiming the front tires to get any use out of them. Also, it might help to make the rear wheels' lateral friction a bit less so that they're more prone to slide around. Try driving the GT for a bit... I tried to tune the tire parameters a while ago to be a bit more forgiving....

But anyway, it's not that you're doing anything wrong (although you SHOULD stop using the keyboard, this isn't a goofy NFSU physics engine), no one can really drift very well in this game yet (especially not me, and I wrote the dang thing)... I still blame the car setups first, though.
I do suppose more lateral grip on the front tires will help. Ill try that. I like the default lateral traction because you can break the rear loose with a stiffer hand brake but if you loosen it too much, the car will spin as soon as you break traction.

As far as drifting very well, Ive been able to do decently. I can do good single drifts in simple corners (90 degrees, 180s) but thats about all. Once, I managed to do the first 180 and first two 90 degree turns in detroit.

It should be possible to drift well with the keyboard with some tweaking. Response time is key tho, it might require a "keyboard mode" to be made but oh well.

Btw, set max steering angle to 60 and lower its front caster to about 1.5 or 2. AWD sliding becomes cake. RWD is still kinda hard. I know its not realistic but it works.
I found a good 3D Pacejka editor that worked for Windows but never got around to compiling it on Linux to use it. There's probably a link on the forums around here somewhere...I'll see if I can find it.
